Celebration of: Wildflowers, pollinators, and the power of leaving nature to grow š±š
šø What Is Every Flower Counts?
Every Flower Counts is a national campaign by Plantlife in the UK that celebrates the wildflowers blooming in lawns and highlights how important they are to pollinators like bees, butterflies, and other vital insects.
Celebrated this year on May 31, 2025, this initiative encourages people to take part in the #nomowmay movement by letting their grass grow wild and then counting the flowers at the end of the month.
Why? Because every flower counts, and by simply letting your lawn bloom, you’re creating a mini meadow that supports struggling wildlife and boosts biodiversity right at your doorstep.
š Why Flowers (and Lawns) Matter
Your lawn might seem like just grass, but to pollinators, it's potential paradise. When you mow less, wildflowers like daisies, dandelions, clover, and selfheal can bloom freely, providing nectar and pollen that bees, beetles, and butterflies desperately need.
Here’s why it matters:
š¼ Wildflowers feed pollinators – no flowers = no food.
š Bees and pollinators are in decline globally.
š” Lawns make up millions of square metres across the UK - imagine if even half were buzzing with life!
š± No-mow lawns support soil health and boost your garden’s resilience to drought and pests.
š How to Take Part in Every Flower Counts
- Join No Mow May
Skip the mower during May to let wildflowers grow naturally in your lawn or green space.
- Count Your Flowers (May 31st)
On Every Flower Counts Day, count how many flowers you see in a square metre of your lawn and record them using Plantlife’s online calculator. You’ll even get your Personal Nectar Score!
- Share Your Patch
Post your wild lawn and flower counts online using #everyflowercounts and #nomowmay to inspire others.
- Keep Growing Wild
Consider leaving part of your lawn to stay natural all summer long or create a mini meadow patch.
š¼ Fun Ways to Celebrate With Kids or Schools
- š Run a flower ID activity in school grounds or local parks
- šØ Paint or draw wildflowers spotted in your garden
- š Build a bug hotel to go alongside your wildflower lawn
- šø Start a “wild lawn diary” to track blooms and pollinators
š Small Patch, Big Impact
Every daisy, buttercup, or clover bloom helps make the world a better place. By letting nature take its course, even in just a patch of your lawn, you’re doing something powerful.
So, this May 31st, don’t reach for the lawnmower, reach for a flower guide instead.
Because every flower counts, and so do you. š
Happy Every Flower Counts Day 2025!
Let it grow, let it bloom, let it bee. ššø
