Our Aims for 2026: Building a Better Future for Ecology Careers

When we launched Jobs in Ecology, the goal was simple. Create a place where ecologists could find relevant roles without wading through noise, and where employers could connect with people who genuinely care about the environment.

As the sector continues to evolve, so do we. Ecology is facing growing pressure from skills shortages, tighter budgets, increasing workloads, and a generation of professionals questioning how sustainable their careers really are. 2026 needs to be a year where we stop accepting that this is just how it is.

Here are our aims for 2026 and how we plan to support ecologists and employers in a more meaningful way.

Putting Ecologists First, Always

Too often, ecology careers are framed as a passion you should be grateful for rather than a profession that deserves respect, fair pay, and realistic workloads.

In 2026, our focus is firmly on:

  • Promoting roles with transparent salaries and clear expectations
  • Challenging poor hiring practices through better employer education
  • Highlighting employers who genuinely invest in their people

Ecologists should not have to burn out to prove their commitment to the environment.

Supporting Small and Growing Consultancies

Small consultancies are the backbone of the ecology sector, yet they are often the most stretched when it comes to hiring.

Our aim for 2026 is to make recruitment simpler and more sustainable for small businesses by:

  • Offering flexible and affordable job advertising
  • Helping employers write clearer, more honest job descriptions
  • Providing guidance on attracting and retaining talent, not just filling roles
  • Giving small companies a platform to showcase their brand, values, and culture

Good recruitment should support business growth, not slow it down.

Expanding Beyond Job Listings

A job board alone is no longer enough. Ecologists need support across their whole career journey.

In 2026, Jobs in Ecology will continue to grow into a wider support platform, including:

  • Practical career advice and insights from the sector
  • Support for freelancers, contractors, and self-employed ecologists
  • Resources focused on long-term career sustainability

We want to help people stay in ecology, not just get their next role.

Rising Standards Across the Sector

Recruitment reflects the health of a sector. Poor hiring practices often point to deeper structural issues.

Our aim is to use Jobs in Ecology as a platform to:

  • Encourage better hiring behaviour and candidate experience
  • Promote realistic workloads and ethical business practices
  • Support conversations around pay, progression, and wellbeing

Change does not happen overnight, but it starts by being honest about what needs to improve.

Looking Ahead

Ecology matters. The people doing the work matter just as much.

As we move into 2026, our commitment is clear. Jobs in Ecology will continue to stand for fairness, transparency, and long-term thinking in environmental careers. We will keep listening, keep adapting, and keep pushing for a sector where people can build careers they are proud of without sacrificing their wellbeing.

If you are an ecologist, an employer, or simply someone who cares about the future of the profession, we are glad you are here. www.jobsinecology.co.uk
